Infamous gang rapist makes bid for release

FIRST ON 7: One of Sydney's most feared and infamous rapists is making a bid to be released back into the community.

The 29-year-old who can only be identified as MMK is one of four Pakistani brothers who were convicted over a series of indecent assaults and rapes of girls as young as 13-years-old.

The horrific crimes took place between 2001 and 2002, the man was just 16 at the time of his conviction.

7 News was told of the man's bid for freedom from the family of one of his victims.

Some of the girls were gang-raped at knifepoint and told they would be killed, the crimes shocked Sydney.

One of the most shocking facts of the case was that the men were all brothers and lured the girls to their Ashfield home and subjected them to hours of torture.

MMK was just 16 at time of conviction, he was the youngest of the brothers but among the most violent.

In April 2004 he was sentenced to a maximum of 22 years for nine counts of gang rape.

At the time one of the victims said: "I would like to say 'I won', have fun in prison boys."

One of the brothers was released early a few years ago bur other victims are fighting for MMK to stay where he is, behind bars.

Police, victim's families and rape counsellors have serious concerns about the proposed release.

Howard Brown, a spokesman for the Victims of the Crime Assistance League told 7 News: "The problem that I have is that there are some that are just not suitable for day release and these brothers are those."

Karen Willis, from Rape and Domestic Violence Services Australia added: "These men are incerdibly violent and we need to ensure that their behaviours have changed and if they haven't changed then we can identify and respond really quickly."

Recently MMK was found to have committed a sex act with a woman in the visitors area of a juvenile jail and that is why he was denied a bid at parole last year.

Corrective Services minister David Elliott told 7 News MMK is entitled to apply for parole annually but but he 'will do all he can' to make sure MMK stays in jail.

The final call will lay with the Corrective Services Commissioner.
