Man charged following peak hour road rage which allegedly saw bus attacked with shovel

A man has been charged after he allegedly smashed a Sydney bus with a shovel in a road rage attack filmed by a witness.

The bus was travelling on Marrickville Rd in Marrickville about 9.40am, when it was approached by another driver.

Footage shows a man yelling abuse before grabbing a shovel from the back of his car and allegedly hitting the front window of the M30 bus.

As a result the windscreen shattered.

The driver then fled the scene in his car.

The bus driver was uninjured however they reportedly feared for their life.

Despite more than $1000 damage, the bus was repaired and back on the road for the afternoon peak.

The brief but frenzied attack unfolded in front of several witnesses who watched on from across the road.

"He was telling the bus driver to get out, the bus driver was like nah, nah, nah," witness Paul told 7 News.

"If he would have got out he would have got smashed by the shovel for sure."

Police have since arrested a 44-year-old man who attended Marrickville Police Station overnight.

He was charged with destroy or damage property and being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.

The man was given conditional bail and is set to appear in Newtown Local Court on March 3.
